questions:
a statement concerning pictures in architecture
by candy at the final presentation to
guest professor antonino saggio's stay in kassel
though i am requested to present some project output here i will instead confront you with the questions that have arisen out of the past project experiences, especially with 'hyperarchitecture'. though they have a very obvious consequence on our proceedings, i have never heard them spoken out loudly.
i ask these questions because there is a lack of reflexion in current architectural thought rather than lack of creativity. it seems that the notion of a 'way out' of architecture's current dilemma makes architects go mad, pursuing formal heaven...
what is the concern of architecture?
the creativity produced all over the world seems to have little impact on architectural progress. Should we not ask the question 'why?' instead of taking this state as given and stop moving? architecure has gone to the surface, to superficiality, in the end even to less, to a simple screenshot.
the substance.
where can that be found? in the solutions. architecture must solve problems to arrive at a new condition instead of trying to grasp the sense of beautiful pictures. the virtual is NOT an image!! where does architecture really want to go?
the seduction of images is a major reason for architecture beng stuck. must not every picture raise a specific question - the question of what was the reason for its being? it seems that reason and reasonable judgement in some areas of architecture have been exchanged with awe and devotion.
i think that the question of reality has even greater significance than the question of the virtual that is drowning architectural thought. the virtual is not closed up into computers. we are using new tools, but has not architectural power always come out of the ability of architects to transform the virtual and merge it with the actual?
while everyone knows the complexity of the world and it is the most natural thing to people to deal with the ever-fluctuating reality, it seems unbelievable that architecture is perplexed with something that we all already know very well. must we not, instead, open our eyes and look down to the ground and behind the curtains?
